moving to New Zealand

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

The packers arrived at 7 am. By 11.30 96 boxes were ready to go and by 12.30 the container was loaded and heading for the docks. Wow. What a start!

Two days at Barbs. She had organised a farewell party with friends travelling from as far as Derby and Margate! Plus friends from nearby that we have had for 35 years or more. It was a great night. We especially toasted our friend Flo who was in Kos but unfortunately her reply is not suitable to be published here!

A big thanks to Barbs for looking after us so well. Pictured here as a rose between two more roses.

Planning for our Glamping existence at 15 Kereru Place. Pyes Pa, Tauranga 3112, New Zealand

9th November. Managed to get two chairs to sit on when we move. Have purchased a BBQ to be delivered on the 27th and booked a handy man to erect it one week later. Can't have Christmas in NZ without tossing a prawn on the Barbie, can we?

We have managed well in the Barn with restricted cooking facilities. It is amazing what you can conjour up with two Halogen hot plates and a microwave! However it will be good to get to Kereru and have a big fridge freezer, an oven, our own washing machine and a huge tele with sky sports!!!!!!! All we will need then is the contents of our container before Christmas so we can get the house ready for Jill's visit.

Lynn going for her morning walk on Papamoa Beach before lunch at The Blue Bar and Eatery. Fabulous place right on the waters edge. Thanks Sue and Rick for the recommendation!

This is an alternative way to arrive in Tauranga. Will let Richard decide what the plane is but it seats about 60.

Dave and Vrons visited at the barn and gave it the thumbs up. Have taken a list of things we have asked to borrow for our "Glamping Experience!"

Busy day today over in Pyes Pa. Have signed up with a doctor's practice and a dentist. Shock horror! when we make our appointment with the Dentist then the Hygenist..... each appointment will be for an hour!!!!!!!  Lynn's gag reflex is pretty awful at the best of times. Good luck trying to take an x ray of her teeth!! We ventured past the house to make sure it was still there and are getting quite excited about the move.  Here it is from the road.

Then lunch out by the sea followed by an hour reading our books here.

One more stop at the Work and Income Centre to apply for our Gold Cards....... Seniors..... free Bus..... Discounts etc so we will see. Also got  forms to complete for Community Services which might mean help with health and prescription costs. One hour with a bloody Dentist will need a mighty slice of help!!!!

Another lovely day at the water's edge. This time at Ferguson Park. What amazes me is these parks, and there are masses of them, are free with clean toilet and shower facilities....... free gas BBQ to cook on and all provided by the Tauronga Council. We just rocked up to this one today....... parked no charge at any stage of the year and read our books and had some lunch. Magic!

17 th November. The adventure today was to go closer to where we are going to live to check out parks and Falls. Went to the Mclaren Falls and it was gorgeous. Then found a park on our side of the bay with all the usual amenities.

On the Rocks.

Nice spot for relaxing in the future at Rotary Park.

Weather has turned April showersy so have used the opportunity to get some more jobs done.Library first so Lynn can stock up on her reading. Vodaphone to  discuss our contract options. We have our English numbers until December 20th but I think then we will swop to a New Zealand number as our three months grace in a Commonwealth Country will be at an end. However as we are using WhatsApp to phone England it will  need to know the change of number to connect. Will note it in the next blog which will be the Christmas edition.

21st November More rain and more jobs to do. Applied for NZ driving Licence at the AA office and accepted quote for contents insurance, picked up Modem from Dave and Vrons, bought Landline telephone for $129.00 for three walkabout phones..... told the man we had applied for our Gold Card but it hadn't come so showed English Driving Licence to prove age and when we looked at the ticket..... discount for being old ......59.99 dollars!!!!!! So only cost $70.00 for three Panasonic phones which is £35.00!  We are made up with that!

Now got landline number which is +64 7 543 5138 which you could WhatsApp us on.

The other exciting news apart from Rob and Flick turning up here soon is that Jill is coming for New Year and staying until the end of Jan and then Karen and Janice are coming for just over a week from Perth!. Eileen and Dave will be here in March. OMG this is so exciting.

Eight weeks ago this was happening.

Eight weeks on we get the keys to our new place. Here it is on the inside.

Lounge followed by bathroom and bedroom.

Lynn Lounge and Kitchen.

Have met our landlord and he was so nice. Gave us a hug on first meeting! The place is fantastic and we love it already. Glamping starts next week so next blog should find our stuff in situ and seasons greetings attached.

For now ...........Haere ra.

25Nov

Big week of purchases of household essentials that are not currently on the high seas. TV, F Freezer, Washing Machine, Microwave and Lounge furniture.

25th November. First day at the house. Heard from Flick and Rob who will be with us on Tuesday. Installed the phones but not working yet. My new bed arrives Tuesday so hopefully Rob can help us build it! Despite all other photos it really does rain in New Zealand. In fact it has rained all night and all day. Listening to TMS T20 World Cup Final. Poor performance in the final and Australia too good for us.

Started the move in experience with some hefty purchases! Began with K Mart and some cheap basics...... moved onto Harvey Norman for a combi microwave and grill in the Black Friday sale still on ...on Monday!!!!

Then into Furnish for a sofa and chaise to fill the lounge and so Jill can lie flat when she comes. The salesman said Feb delivery and we said no to that as we have visitors! He checked the stock.... one left ................delivery date....... this Wednesday. Sorry Jen but our luck continues.

Spent late am unpacking stuff and arranging homes for all. Nicer day today as you can see from our garden.

Just got to get a gardener now!!!!!

26th November. Very exciting day at new house. Bed arrived early and our first English visitors came at 10.30. Rob and Flick who are travelling NZ in a camper van.

They arrived with champagne and a rose bush for our garden. We sat in the garden and caught up with their mammoth trip and our move out here. John our landlord arrived to fix the cat flap and Rob and I put together the new bed.  Went for trip out....... called in at the Barnloft then out to the coast.

They loved it! Out to lunch at Nautilus for all you can eat buffet for Seniors $16.00 each.  https://www.nautilusrestaurant.co.nz/

Then back to Kereru and then they were gone. Great day! Ultra fibre man then called and we are up and running for the TV to come tomorrow.

27th OMG what a day! TV and a lesson on modern tech. PLEASE NOTE LANDLINE HAS CHANGED.  NUMBER IS +64 7 562 8775. Just as we were getting to grips with the new tech, the BBQ arrived. Then the sofa and chaise delivered by two of our neighbours, Dave and Lynn who work for Furnish. John the landlord came with a fixed cat flap and then finally the Ffreezer and the washing machine. All working great.  30th.... Sky installed....... Yeah Sky Sport back on the tele. Good news is we get Sky starter pack and Sky sports for $56.10 which is £28.05 English. We were paying £123.00 a month at Sackville! Spoke to Jen and Ben and heard much better news on their move so very happy for them.

1st December. Container due to arrive in Sydney today having been packed on the 1st October so not too bad. On the tracking number it says arriving in Tauranga December 7th so if that is the case we will be ecstatic! Having said that, the house is looking good with our new purchases.

Sofa and chaise........ bar stools and Combi microwave and f freezer in the background. Compare that picture to the one at the end of Blog 4 and you will see the difference.

Tomorrow Karin and Drew, our landlords at the Barn have invited us for drinks in the pm. Might have to be inside as it is persisting with rain. It is the aftermath of the Sydney deluge, which caused massive floods in the city.

The stay in the Barn has been excellent and has allowed us to get to know the city. If you are ever visiting this area we can thoroughly recommend it. Last two days.

Sunday 1st December...... great news...... container has arrived and has been put  on a ship sailing to Tauranga. Could be here by the end of this week. That would be such a relief to get organised before Jill arrives. Awesome! Oops. Just when you thought things were settled..... checked online with our container number and it has missed the boat!

Had drinks and nibbles with Karen and Drew which was great.  We have been so happy here and achieved a lot since we got here on October 23rd. Next step to move into rented with all our stuff from England.

December 5th. Found a gardener who has mowed and done a fantastic job. Moved in to 15 Kereru and have cooked proper meals in the combi microwave. Latest news on container is that it will leave Sydney on the 11th and arrive in Tauranga on the 16th. NZvanlines have assured us that it will be here before Christmas so we feel slightly relieved as this info has been given by three different sources. It will be on the MSC Carla 3 and i shall be tracking it on my new app...... Vessel finder!

New Mobile phones for our WhatsApp communications. Alison is +64 272554765 and Lynn is +64 272559688.

Christmas blog will feature our stuff arriving and is being prepared.

Bye for now.

05Dec

First week at 15 Kereru Place and summer has arrived.

Early December.

Last of the torrential rain that has blighted the whole of NZ and warming up a treat. Had nice surprise with a visit from our landlords and a gift of a bottle of wine. They stayed for a cuppa and a chat which was great. They are heading off next week for a six week road trip down to the South island in their camper van. They have an umbrella for outside which they are going to give us as it is spare!

Richard, the handy man came to erect the BBQ. So glad I booked him because it took him two hours.

It took me 2 and 1/2 hours to build a coffee table at the start of the week. Ordered garden table and 6 chairs from The Warehouse. Chairs have arrived but no table yet.

Friday we went to Paula Knight's Studio on the beach front. I showed some of you her work and we have bought a piece with the money LWGC members gave us as a leaving present. Collect Monday 10th so photo later in the blog. Afterward went for coffee and lunch at our favourite cafe in Papamoa Beach. The Pohutukawa trees are just coming out and look gorgeous.

This is such a great spot.

How sad to hear they have found the British Backpackers body. Grace Millane is being remembered all over New Zealand. You may remember when we first stayed on the West Coast of New Zealand we said how in the middle of bloody nowhere we were. Well she was discovered just off the Scenic Highway, which we travelled on when we headed North for our roadtrip. Very sad day.

We have both got our NI numbers which we need for tax purposes. They found Lynn's from when she worked here in the 70's! Had first Gin and Tonic on Friday with lemons off our tree!!!!!!

Getting Richard, handy man, to come back and tie up the grapes that are in abundance.  Vrons and Dave called in for a cuppa before they drove to Auckland to collect Vrons brother and partner. Win is coming on Sunday to advise on plants in garden.

Early stages of Sauvignon Parkhouse!!!!!!!  Win came with her great gardening knowledge and taught us how to cut and train the grapes. She brought us a little herb garden which was lovely and was one of the things we had talked about getting.

Monday 10th December. Busy couple of days ahead. Looking for a base for the umbrella John and Alexis gave us, paint to touch up here and there if we move picture hooks, first health check with the nurses at the surgery and a gas man to check over the BBQ.  As well as a visit to NZVanlines who are moving us eventually and a request to Dave and Lynne, our neighbours, to come and help us hang the picture that we collected today from Paula Knight's studio. Check out her work at https://www.paulaknight.co.nz/

All tasks completed and may know more at end of the week re the container but to be honest my two apps VesselFinder and ShipTracking mean we know as much as they do!

Dave and Lynne have come and the picture is up. Thank you all at LWGC for this magnificent gift and will mean we think of you all daily. I hope you like it. It is Opito Bay in the Coromandel Region, which is just up the road from here.

Wednesday 12th December. A day of chasing and more buying. Chasing the container with phone calls to the shipping line in Sydney........hopefully will be shipped tomorrow and arrive before Christmas. Chasing garden table ordered with the six chairs already received... no luck so far. Buying stuff eg Christmas present for each other although I suspect we will be spending  much of Christmas Day unwrapping 96 boxes of stuff!!!!!! Happy Birthday Jenny Burt.

Went for hair cut today to a place this side of town. Walked into The Sharing Shed which is probably a pun on shearing and didn't have to wait. Very good cutter but didn't have a lot to chat about. Lynn's hairdresser much chattier. When we went to pay Lynn said her girl lived in Bedford before moving to New Zealand. A brief exchange finds she was born in Bedford Hospital, where I had my tonsils out!!!!  How amazing is that?

Thursday 13th December. Another good day. Pruned the grapes and then took masses of packaging to the tip.Went to pictures to see The Children's Act with Emma Thompson, who was again excellent as a judge presiding over difficult cases. Shop and home for first BBQ on new machine. More good news and that is our container has been loaded onto a ship in Sydney and leaves tomorrow . Eta tomorrow when known. First doctor's visit tomorrow for blood tests and prescriptions.  First BBQ was stonking with homemade burger by Lynn and cooked on the BBQ by Alison.

We constantly ask ourselves why do New Zealand trees have beautiful flowers on them?

Jacaranda and Pohutukawa in town. This down the road from us....... with Agapanthus in the background.

Our front entrance and rear garden.

Container has left Sydney but still has uncertainty attached re destination and timings. Won't say anymore until definite information exists.

NZ really is a beautiful place to live. Doctor introduced herself as Nicola...... very nice and a good find. Had fifteen minutes with her and she had clearly read the notes from the Nurses interview and spoke to you as if she knew your history. What a refreshing change!!!!!  It cost $41.00 for the appointment which I think is pretty good for 15 minutes. If the NHS did this for people of means maybe they would be able to offer more affordable care for the have nots!

Saturday 14th Cathy called today for first visit and bought us the most beautiful box of strawberries from Whakatane.

They are the nicest strawberries I have ever tasted. On the eve of Lynn's birthday we are having garlic prawns on the BBQ......yummy yum scrum. The birthday girl will have to wait for her steak til tomorrow.

Monday 17th . Had day of phone calls around Lynn's birthday. Good to catch up with family and friends. Had a lovely surprise present from Rex which was The history of Manchester United through newspaper cuttings from 1909. Also glorious Country File calendar with some great photos. Thanks for all your cards and well wishes...... here comes some more!

We get post three times a week....Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The birthday meal went well and the steak was gorgeous. First of many methinks!

We have a date for our stuff moving in, which is Christmas Eve at 8 am so that will be nice. At least Jill will have a bed to sleep on when she gets here on the 29th. I will leave you at the end of Blog 6 with all our lovely cards and well wishes. I hope you have a lovely Christmas..........

24Dec

Container arriving plus Jill arriving for New Year

23 rd December. Just less than one day to go before our stuff arrives. Getting very excited about where things will go but to be fair there is so much storage here, we will be fine. More good news is that miserable Mourinho is gone and lovely Ole has taken over. A win of 5 1 at Cardiff...... omg things are looking up!!!!!

24th at 9am  NZ Vanlines turns up. Two guys and one very strong girl start unloading. Each time they enter the property they shout a number between 1 and 96 and we had to say which room and tick it off the checklist! Despite the worst forecast since we arrived it stayed dry until they left and then the heavens opened and it rained for the rest of the day. Looked like this at lunchtime Christmas Eve.

Dining room

Garage

Just after they left

Boxing Day Activity

This also arrived Christmas Eve and we wanted it to be up for when Jill arrives in two days time.

A well earned Gin and Tonic!!!!!!!!!!

27 th December

Now all gone.

28th December. unpacked last of the boxes and went to the tip along with the rest of the population! Surprisingly, Ashford was much better at recycling than here in Tauranga..... only some plastics, glass, cardboard and paper, green waste and white goods. No metal, no wood, no small appliances, no clothing and no shoes. Since China has refused to take the world's waste products, NZ has had to increase its use of landfill. When we were in North Northland, near Pukenui,  there was a huge protest going on about a new proposed landfill site near a small community. The problem is the land up there is not fit to grow much on so it is prime for landfill applications. Another problem is the roads are not fit for the hundreds of waste lorries that would have to pass through small villages to reach the site. Therefore uping the recycling effort  seems to be the only choice for New Zealand. Watch this space.

The weather forecast for Christmas Day was so awful we had Roast Pork. The promised BBq has been delayed due to unpacking needs. Boxing Day was glorious weather but the putting together of a Danish set of Outdoor furniture, where the diagram was the wrong way around and the screw threads were hard to start.................... suffice to say it took me all day to get it done. Next time I suggest ordering a piece of flat pack furniture online....... remind me of Boxing Day 2018!!!!!

Afternoon of 28th December. All done and ready for our first staying guest, Jill. At least it is a lot closer than the UK for her journey. We are driving to Auckland to pick her up tomorrow afternoon.

Collecting Jill went well and despite being 40 mins late she travelled well. We sat up chatting for a couple of hours and had a a long lay in on Sunday morning. She had rested up for most of Sunday but was keen to cut a lemon off our tree for a well earned gin and tonic.

New Year's eve came and went. The first day of 2019 was glorious weather and we attempted a trip to the Mount but as it was holiday time we bagged it and decided we would do that after this week. BBQ steak was a great way to start the year.

2nd day of 2019 we took Jill across to our old stamping ground to the Barn and called to see Karin, the girls and the two dogs. Coffee overlooking the harbour and a nice breeze off the water.

The Pohutukawa trees are just coming to the end but are being replaced by the Jacaranda.

You can just see the red flowers on the Pohutukawa.

Jan 5th. Couple of lazy days taken after a busy time. The son of a friend of Jill's called this morning for a catch up. He moved to NZ twenty years ago. Yesterday saw that our shipping company MSC had a ship off the coast of Belgium and Holland that lost 270 containers in the sea, after a massive storm.

So not feeling too sad that our container was a bit delayed!!!!!!! Could have been a lot worse!!!!

watched Sri Lanka and NZ in a ODI yesterday and just before 9pm the camera man picked up something in the sky. Either space junk or an asteroid. Looked like this!!!!

Yesterday over Bay of Plenty

Twelfth night and all is said and done for Christmas and New Year. Lovely day although a bit windy. Just lost my sheet off the line.... over the fence and ended up on next doors boat.!!!! Won't take long to dry at this rate.

Thought I would send  Blog 7 now as the next one will involve a bit more travelling. Plans are to go to Whakatane, Lynn's old stamping ground to meet up with Sue and Rick and Kathy. Then yesterday, out of the blue, got an e mail from Annie who I knew from childhood. Turns out she lives in the Coromandel, where Lynn and I have booked a five day break after we take Jill back on the 31st Jan. Blog 8 will have a bit more travel and pictures of New Zealand.

Until then..... good health and much happiness for 2019.
